A Structural Landscaping Masterpiece
This project showcases how strong structural landscaping can completely transform an outdoor space into something both highly functional and visually striking.
Combining gabion retaining walls, custom steel features, architectural arbours, and low-maintenance turf areas, the finished result delivers a modern outdoor environment built for long-term durability and everyday enjoyment.
Every element of the project was carefully designed to work together – balancing texture, structure, planting, and open space to create a landscape that feels clean, cohesive, and highly considered.
Gabion Retaining Walls
One of the defining features of this project was the construction of more than 120 metres of gabion retaining wall.
Filled with 75-100mm basalt rock, the gabion system was selected for its natural texture, structural strength, drainage performance, and long-term durability. Beyond the practical function of retaining the sloping site, the walls became a major visual feature throughout the landscape design.
The dark basalt stone provides strong architectural contrast against the surrounding planting and steel elements while helping the outdoor spaces feel grounded and structured.
Steel Garden Beds & Edging
Custom galvanised steel garden beds and edging were installed throughout the project to create clean lines and defined planting zones.
The steel detailing adds a contemporary feel to the landscape while helping separate lawn areas, pathways, planting, and entertaining spaces. These structural garden elements also help simplify maintenance and reinforce the modern architectural style of the project.
The combination of steel, stone, and planting creates a strong visual balance between natural and constructed materials.
Steel Arbours & Archways
Two custom powder-coated steel pergolas and archways were designed and installed as feature structures within the landscape.
Built to support climbing plants including roses and wisteria, the arbours help soften the harder structural elements while adding vertical interest and seasonal colour to the space.
Wire supports were integrated into the structures to encourage plant growth and create a more immersive garden environment over time.
Artificial Turf & Low Maintenance Living
To complete the transformation, English Meadow artificial turf was installed around two sides of the property and connected directly to the main entertaining area.
The turf creates a clean, low-maintenance outdoor zone ideal for both children and adults to enjoy throughout the year. The open lawn areas help soften the surrounding structural landscaping while improving usability and reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.
The result is a practical outdoor space that remains visually impressive without demanding constant upkeep.
