Orange during the winter can be a cold and icy time, and you and your family might be tempted to abandon the garden to rug up indoors. A winter garden can look spectacular in its own right though, with frosty grasses, bare branches and wintry hedges creating the perfect backdrop for your stunning focal point- a fire pit!
1. Type
There are many different types of fire pits to choose from which might feel overwhelming at first. A good place to start is to think about what kind of fuel you want to use.
Wood Burning: For some, the smoky, woody aroma and large flame is the best part of sitting around an outdoor fire. There are both portable and built in fire pits that use wood, and can be sourced in a variety of styles and materials. Another option is building an outdoor fireplace, which not only looks great, but adds a sense of luxury to your space.
Propane or Natural Gas: Fire bowls or fire columns use natural gas to create the flame. There are numerous styles available from rustic to sleek and modern. The Fire column in particular is quite striking with the use of glass containing the flame, being aesthetic as well as functional. These styles have the benefit of being portable and mess-free, great for smaller areas like a patio.
Electric or Gas: A fire table can be a really fun design piece that’s bound to step up your entertaining. The fire is contained in the centre of the table providing warmth, leaving the outside to be used to set out food, drinks and games. This is another option that comes in a large range of styles and sizes, such as coffee tables, dining tables or even along a bar.
2. Space
When choosing a fire pit, it’s important to pick one that works best with your space. For example, don’t install a built-in fire pit if you’re only renting, in case you have to leave it behind! You also don’t want to be putting a fire pit on your lawn as the heat will damage the grass. A concreted or paved spot works best, both for function and for safety.
3. Styling
If you want to, you can just plonk your fire pit in your garden, light it up and start the party. However we think that half the fun comes from styling the space as well! All these fire pit options come in a range of colours and materials, so you can choose one to match your garden’s style. Planting tall shrubs or hedges around your fire pit area can create a cosy garden “room” with the added benefit of blocking wind. Furniture such as tables to hold drinks and s’mores, as well as comfortable, weather-proofed chairs make for an inviting space to spend your time and a sure fire win with your friends and family.
