Tips for getting your lawn looking its best!

A well mown and cared for lawn can make all the difference, offsetting your garden and highlighting all your hard work! It may seem daunting at first, but with a little time and care your lawn will soon be flourishing.

Here are four tips and tricks to getting your lawn looking its best.

1. Regular Mowing

With spring and summer comes the weekly task of lawn mowing. While for some people this a chore, others find it a deeply satisfying task. The less length you cut off your lawn, the healthier and greener it’ll look. This is why a regular mow is so important in order to keep it the length you want. Set your mower blades to the highest setting for the first few cuts, and keep the catcher on the back especially during spring so that air, rain and fertiliser can reach the soil.

2. Feeding and Sowing

Once the grass is actively growing, it’s time to feed. Most fertilisers last around three months, so it’s ideal to apply it in summer, autumn and spring. Spring is the most important season though, as your lawn is breaking its winter dormancy and a good feed will assist with growth. You can use either a liquid fertiliser or a granular one. Plants take up nutrients through their root systems, so a liquid fertiliser will be absorbed quicker, while a granular form has a slow release leading to longer lasting results.

It’s worth remembering warm season grasses and cool season grasses need to be fed at different times. Not all lawns are the same!

3. Lawn Care

Hand weeding a lawn can be a great way to burn off any frustration you’re currently feeling, but if you’re more of a zen gardener then using liquid weed killer is just as effective. The best time to apply is early morning while the dew is still on the leaves. Then as the day warms the liquid treatment will be absorbed and works faster.

Aerating your lawn should also be done while the soil is wet. Dry and hardened soil can make it hard for the aerators to penetrate deep enough, reducing the benefit to the lawn.

Watering should be done twice a week, with enough water to soak several inches down. This encourages longer roots and helps your grass become more drought tolerant.

4. Iconic Outdoors

If it’s time for a new lawn, or you’ve been thinking about artificial turf then Iconic Outdoors can help! We can roll turf or use a hydroseeding method that promotes quick establishment and long term growth. If an artificial lawn is more your speed we excavate the space, prep the area and then install it for you. We have a range of styles, colours and piles available to suit your home and lifestyle.

Iconic Outdoors also does lawn edging which gives your garden some subtle structure. You can choose either steel, pavers, timber or spade edging to provide that functional finishing touch and make your backyard look amazing!
