1. Planning

Start by digging over your beds to aerate the soil, remove weeds and incorporate fertiliser. Any trees and shrubs that have finished flowering should be pruned back, to maintain the shape and encourage new growth. Plant new shrubs into any gaps you find to create a full and lush border.

If you’re anything like us, the warmer weather is making your green thumbs itch to get back into the garden. Daffodils are blooming, cherry trees are flowering and the smell of freshly-mown lawns is in the air. Spring is the perfect time to clean up your garden beds, get planting and relax in your outdoor space. Now is also the time to start planning out your garden beds. Different plants need different levels of water, sun and shade.

Planting in the right places will drastically reduce your trips out to buy replacements! When planning, keep in mind the size of the plant and the area it will spread into so you leave plenty of room for any trailing vines.

2. Planting

Flowers: There are so many flowers that you can plant during spring, turning your garden into a riot of colours and scents. Bulbs should be planted in intervals over the next few weeks, so that you have a succession of flowers until autumn.

Annual seedlings to consider for late spring and summer include california poppies, daisies, marigolds, snapdragons and sunflowers. There’s no need to fertilise flowers as it makes the soil too rich, reducing flowers. To prep the area, gently rake the soil over instead.

Veggies: While it may be tempting to fully plant your veggie patch, it’s best to wait until around the beginning of October, after the last frost. Tomatoes, eggplants, capsicum and zucchini thrive in the hot summer sun, so hold off on them or plant in seed trays and position in a sunny spot.

Hardier plants like potatoes, beans, carrots, celery and onions can all be planted straight into the garden bed now, along with herbs such as coriander, parsley, dill, chives, rosemary and thyme. Mint can be planted, but is an invasive plant so plan accordingly!
